When you don’t know much about golf, it can be hard to know what you’re missing out on. The dictionary defines golf as “a game played on a large open-air course, in which a small hard ball is struck with a club into a series of small holes in the ground, the object being to use the fewest possible strokes to complete the course.” Doesn’t really sound like fun, right? Wrong. I learned to play in my early teenage years and it is a wonderful activity to spend time outside alone or with others. The art of precision is rewarding to hone, and just surrounding myself with beautiful nature is worth half the cost to play! If you haven’t played golf before, stop missing out-now is as good a time to try something new as any, and Old 96 District’s Golf Courses are a great place to do it.
Here in the Old 96 District, you will find 4 18-hole championship courses and several 9-hole courses with fun and challenging designs. Our home in the Upper Western part of South Carolina means that most of our courses are within an hour-ish from the Augusta National Golf Club. The Masters is just around the corner, and we invite you to choose one of our courses for your next (or first!) fun golf outing. Spend some time enjoying these different terrains.
Let’s take a look at 4 of our championship courses:
- Savannah Lakes Village-Tara and Monticello Courses, McCormick, SC
Savannah Lakes Village offers two 18-hole championship golf courses, each with breathtaking views of Lake Thurmond and the local forests. The site also includes driving ranges and a flexible setup to suit your skill level. Considering they’re only an hour away from Augusta, Georgia, their confidence as a premier golf experience in the Southeast is a big deal. - Stoney Point, Greenwood, SC
Stoney Point in Greenwood, SC is one of the most picturesque public play golf courses in the Upstate of South Carolina with several holes located on Lake Greenwood. There are certain challenging holes on this well-manicured golf course, making for an exciting activity on the links. The course is in immaculate condition from the tee box to the green. - Hickory Knob State Resort Park, McCormick, SC
This is the only State Resort Park golf course in South Carolina. That in itself makes it a special course. So this means once you’re finished with 18-holes of rolling hills and lakefront golfing, a wide array of other activities wait ready to fill your afternoon. Shoot skeet, swim on Lake Thurmond, hike the trails, or stay a night in one of their cabins.
Whether you’re new to the sport, a dedicated fan, or only play twice a year, golfing in the Old 96 District is sure to result in a good time!
Barbara Ware is the Executive Director of the Old 96 District and claims she started playing golf at age 14 and has yet to fully understand it!
